Tutorial image

This image was produced with the help of a tutorial by Johnson Koh, a graphic and web designer in Singapore.

We will be doing this tutorial together in class as an example. It involves the use of Layer adjustments and combines another image using a clever selection technique.

Using tutorials is a great way of learning new image making and manipulation techniques. You can adapt and add to the steps and personalise the methods.

I recorded an action of the layer changes so that I could use it again with a single click. I also added a glowing reflection below the letter by making a copy of the layer and rotating it. I found, that by using the drop shadow layer style, I could create a bit of smoke. Finally I used the Lighting Effects filter to give a realistic glow to the background.

Create a new custom header for your blog using Photoshop

You must make the image an exact match for the pixel sizes given in the Appearance>Custom Header menu in the Dashboard of your blog, it must be saved for the web and devices.

This exercise will:

• Allow you to personalise your blog to reflect your personality
• Allow you to explore the creative possibilities of some of the tools available in Photoshop
• Introduce you to optimising image files for use on your blog and other online applications

You can change the theme and header of your blog until you are satisfied with it.

Use images that you have already taken (e.g. facebook or MySpace photos) or take new pictures to illustrate three different shot types used in film and television.

Publish the pictures and a brief explanatory text on your blog.

Establishing Shot with Caption

This is an example of an establishing shot, there are clear indicators of place that show it is an airport and a caption has also been added. A shot like this would typically be preceded by stock footage of an aircraft landing or taking off.

• Introduce you to adding pictures and text to your blog
• Using Visual and HTML layout
• Re-inforce previous learning about shot types
• Introduce the taking and inclusion of images for specific purpose within your blog
